Sounds like they mean the χ square distribution, where χ is the Greek letter "chi", which is pronounced like "he" in English, only with a stronger "h" sound that is similar to the German "ch" or the Spanish "j". In Spanish "ji" is pronounced almost exactly as "χ" in Greek.
