German term

Keimstelle

German to English Tech/Engineering Physics
Hello,

This refers to spots where crystals (inorganic) are grown. I realize that the biological equivalent is "aperture" in many dictionaries, but that's not what I'm after.

Example: Die Körner waren nicht geimpft, d.h. ohne Keime ausgebildet - die Keimstellen waren nicht vorhanden.

Thanks in advance!

Example sentence:

The method of claim 1, wherein the step of forming the plurality of single crystal silicon nucleation sites comprises: forming a second amorphous silicon layer over the substrat

Peer comment(s):

agree Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. : I think "nucleation site" is the correct translation here... Seeding is the process that starts nucleation..

Seeding/seed point

If my memory serves me correctly.

The reference below is to a seed crystal.

embryo / nucleus / seed

"At the microscopic level, the first stage of the phase transition liquid-to-solid (crystallization) is the "nucleation" stage. In this stage, the random motions of the atoms or molecules apparently create a local situation atypical of the average properties of the substance. Such locally atypical regions, initially merely a few atoms in size, are known as nuclei, embryos, or seeds."
