I decided to ask this even though I think that it must mean that the SHEEP were sent to south to graze (and they were then shorn and that wool was traded). But just in case I'm missing something, here's the full sentence:

Recordemos que se intercambiaba lana de las estancias del norte enviadas a pastar más al sur por tejidos de San Miguel el Grande.
