German term

ungerichtet

German to English Medical Medical (general) Neurology
in neurological report:
"Stehen ungerichtet unsicher, Gehen nur mit Hilfe."

I read previous proz entries for "ungerichtet", but they did not seem right in this context.

Postural instability, unsteady/insecure Sorry Anne, I didn't mean to confuse you with my agree for postural instability which I took to be the translation for Stehen ungerichtet. When googliing for English websites on gait and posture problems, I found that unsicheres Gangbild or unsicherer Stand were often described with the words unsteady or insecure.

Susanne Schiewe Oct 21, 2009:
mehr Kontext wäre hilfreich wenn man nach "gerichtet" bzw. "ungerichtet" googelt, gibt es aber durchaus Hinweise, dass hier die Fallrichtung gemeint sein kann (e.g. 'Romberg test')
Gudrun Maydorn (X) Oct 21, 2009:
Ungerichtet, ungezielt, unorganisiert I assume what is meant is an unorganised, unstructured, undirected, unaligned and basically unnatural way of standing. Getting up "somehow" rather than with head and shoulders straight and with the feet suitably aligned.

postural instability without preferred direction of fall

Some vertigo syndromes are associated with a directional tendency to fall, e.g. always to the right hand side, diagonally, etc., and these directions present clues as to the underlying cause of vertigo (see p. 13 in the ref below). IMO, "ungerichtet" means that the examiner observed no such preferred directions of falling in this patient with postural instability.
(Again I am not sure about the standard phrase on this in English medical reports. Hopefully there will be input from native English medical people.)

agree Gudrun Maydorn (X) : Agree for postural instability (would leave out the rest)

oops - for me just "the rest" is a (possible) translation for "ungerichtet", and "postural instability" would be "Stehen unsicher"

neutral Cilian O'Tuama : but isn't he asking about "ungerichtet", and not about "unsicher"?

'richten' in the sense of 'oriented' - here, unoriented (not supported)?

gerichtet = aufrecht ?

are they saying the patient is unable to stand upright (crooked stance) and is shaky on his/her legs ?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Gudrun Maydorn (X) : This may well include nicht ordnungsgemäß aufgerichtet

Postural instability

Postural instability is a loss of balance that causes someone to feel unsteady. Most people who have had Parkinson's disease for a while begin to have problems with postural instability due to loss of postural reflexes.

Your doctor may test for this with the so-called ‘pull test’ in which your doctor pulls you backward by the shoulders to see how well you compensate for the sudden imbalance.
