Spanish term

formaciones camelísticas

Spanish to English Art/Literary Music concert reviews
Any help with this will be much appreciated. Text is from Cuba.

En su producción discográfica, al igual que en su repertorio pianístico, destacan obras de compositores cubanos, siendo habitual su trabajo junto a *formaciones camelísticas* de diverso formato.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +1 chamber ensembles
4 +1 chamber music formations

Discussion

Charles Davis Jun 9, 2018:
Many years later... I am surprised no one seems to have commented on "camelísticas". This is clearly a typo: as the DLE says, "camelístico" means related to camels ("perteneciente o relativo al camelo"), whereas "camerístico" means related to chamber music ("perteneciente o relativo a la música de cámara"). Or is it a valid variant in Cuba?

chamber ensembles

I suspect "formations" is a literal translation from some romance language. "Ensemble" is much more likely what a musician would say.

*formaciones camelísticas* de diverso formato =

"a range of chamber ensembles"

Thanks!

agree Joel Schaefer : I'm a professional musician (30 years in chamber music, orchestra and opera) and this works. "Formations" does not work.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you very much! I finally went for a range of chamber ensembles - but would like to comment that formations,(and formats) as Luis suggested, can also be used. "

Also, I paste this link that uses both terms (ensemble and formations) in the same text:

San Francisco Piano Quartet

San Francisco Piano Quartet wants to redefine the traditional chamber ensemble.
The four members combine their extensive chamber and solo experience to present as many different chamber music formations as their four instruments will allow. Though the primary group is a piano quartet, the members will also present duos, trios, and solo works. San Francisco Piano Quartet will take the classics of the chamber music repertoire and put a very different spin on the concert goer’s experience.

Thank you!!
Luis, I agree with formations as a valid option - the client preferred range. Thanks a million - I was stuck, since chamber music is generally called música de cámara - the camelística had me baffled.
Peer comment(s):

agree David Hollywood : but I would say "groups"

Thanks a lot, David!
neutral Jim Tucker (X) : neither of the first two links was written by a native EN speaker; they are full of errors. The third link does not open. // My point is that "formation" here sounds like a translation written by a Romance speaker rather than a native EN sp.

I put the third link again, plus other ones. By the way, "ensemble" also comes from a romance language. In Spanish we also use "ensamble" for "ensemble". That's why I chose "formation" for "formación"
