Spanish term

contestacion a prevencion

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
This phrase is found amongst a selection of comments on a fax cover sheet. I have been given a template to work with as the client just wants me to translate the main body of the fax. However, this particular phrase has been translated as "reply to prevention" and I'm fairly sure this is wrong.
It is written in Mexican Spanish and I wondered whether this is an expression particular to Mexico. I'd be grateful if anyone could clear this up for me.

Discussion

Sonia Hill (asker) Jan 28, 2010:
Unfortunately the inhouse translators are of the opinion that "reply to refusal" is fine. I wasn't paid for this part of the translation, as it was a template for the cover page of the fax which I just double checked for my own peace of mind really. I don't think there is a lot I can do :-(
David Brown Jan 28, 2010:
contestacion a prevencion And it will probably be published on the internet and become "fact"
Taña Dalglish Jan 28, 2010:
@ Muriel / Sonia I had been looking at the question too, and had posted an answer which I subsequently blocked. However, it was pretty much along the lines of Liz' original answer (also disappeared), and the word used was "Response to ...", in light of what follows on "atencion inmediata", "carta compromiso" and "tramite de convenio. Muriel, I agree with you, but then again, the client is always right; I would personally still use "response". Un abrazo.
Sonia Hill (asker) Jan 28, 2010:
I agree Muriel. I wasn't convinced by it either to be honest, but, as you know, the client is always right ... sigh!
Muriel Vasconcellos Jan 28, 2010:
Very strange I'm not defending my answer, because the whole thing was unclear, but how they got 'refusal' from "prevencion" is beyond understanding.
Sonia Hill (asker) Jan 28, 2010:
The client has replied to me and said that the best translation for this is "reply to refusal", i.e. a response to a refusal for the trial to be carried out. Thank you all for your help with this.
Sonia Hill (asker) Jan 24, 2010:
Liz's comment has been removed now. Hmm. I'm really not sure about this one. I may ask the agency to double check it with the client, as without more context it could be any number of things. I will let you all know when I have an answer. Thank you for your help.
Rachel Fell Jan 24, 2010:
Yes, could be legal, as I found a legal ref. earlier. Where's Liz's comment, though?!
David Brown Jan 24, 2010:
Contestacion a prevencion "Contestacion a" also could mean "oppostion to"

My fourth point is that there will always be opposition to prevention. There is opposition from colleagues who feel threatened. One of my favourite slides ...

Sonia Hill (asker) Jan 24, 2010:
Hi Rachel, the trial is about a new drug for multiple sclerosis. I think Liz is right and the term may be legal. I will try reposting it as a legal question.
Rachel Fell Jan 24, 2010:
Hi Sonia could 'response to prevention' have any meaning here - what sort of trial is it?
Sonia Hill (asker) Jan 24, 2010:
Hi Cath. It's basically a stand alone comment with a check box next to it. The other three comments are "atencion inmediata", "carta compromiso" and "tramite de convenio". The fax is about progress reports for a clinical trial. Is that any help?
Cath St Clair (X) Jan 24, 2010:
More context Hi Sonia, Is there any wording in the body of this particular section that would give us more context?

prevention response

It's hard to imagine that there would be opposition to prevention. I'm guessing that it may be a mis-translation of English 'prevention response'.

I was about to find examples in the medical area, but most referred to HIV/AIDS:

The penultimate example isn't valid. There were more, but not a lot more, and they all referred to HIV/AIDS.
