Spanish term

eje transversal

Spanish to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. Labor relations, feminism
"Los factores de género como eje transversal en la explicación de la desigualdad salarial"
This is the title of a piece dealing with how "gender factors" cut across all the reasons that underlie "pay disparity"/"the pay gap".
I've been wrestling with how to express "eje transversal" or recast the basic idea -- it doesn't need to be an exact translation but it needs to include all the elements in some way. Grateful for any suggestions!

Yes, all the references support this ...

I don't like it either, but it IS sociology!
Peer comment(s):

agree Patricia Rosas : it's important to keep the idea that the factors that constitute gender cut across each other in many different ways (lots of hits in the context of gender studies)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "ugly as it sounds, I think that this is probably the best and more in tune with sociological usage, though "common thread" or theme would probably express the essential idea more colloquially in most contexts. Thank you for all the suggestions, though, all useful for thinking about what the issue means!"

universal feature / unifying feature / universal underlying feature / universally present feature

the only one I'm doubtful about is "unifying feature" as that has positive connotations that are not present in your context

main issue

May be main factor should be more proper, but considering the word factor is used just before I think issue could work.

The literal translation would be transversal axis, but I think "main issue" works better for the text-
Example sentence:

Corruption is the main issue in the goverment crisis.

linchpin

This is the translation for 'eje transversal' used by the office where I used to work.

common thread

"gender factors as the common thread running through issues of pay inequality" or simply "gender factors as the common thread running through pay inequality"

one approach that might work
