Waehrend der ganzen Zeit hat eine Seuchengefahr nicht bestanden. Erst im April 1945 kamen ...etwa 15 000 halbverhungerte Menschen, unter denen sich 6000 Fleckfieberkranke befanden. Es beduerfte der groessten Anstrengung der Armee, die Gefahr der Verseuchung des ganzen Lagers hintanzusetzen. Den Neuangekommenen wurden die dopperten Verpflegungsrationen zugeteilt, was nur dadurch moeglich war, dass alle Arbeitenden auf die Sonderpraemien verzichteten.

But I would translate the sentence a little different::
It would require a superhuman effort of the whole army to deliberately ignore the risk of infecting the whole camp.

Another possibility which would be using "hintansetzen" correctly. I admit that it is less likely than the first answer , where the verb is not used in the accepted way, but where the sentence is more likely.

It was a superhuman effort of the whole army who deliberately ignored the risk of infecting the entire camp and decided to look after the infectious newcomers in spite of everything and try and save their lives. ( even though it was taking an enormous risk).
