: Estoy de acuerdo, la palabra "failed" simplemente se traduce como NO. Hay quienes se confunden lo traducen como "fallaron/fracasaron/omitieron", pero en realidad simplemente quiere decir que algo no se hizo.

Hi,
what this means is that the two presidents never questioned this assumption.
You wrote "fallaron al no cuestionar", and if I understand this correctly, your translation would imply a certain degree of criticism.
This does not necessarily have to be the case in the English phrase. "Failing to do something" does not always mean that "this person failed because he/she did not do this". Failing to do something can be for any kind of reason (not having the time to do it, not finding it important, forgetting it, .....) so it *can* be a failure (and often it is) but it does not *have* to be.
Also, I think that "suposición" is a better choice than "premisa",

(I simply wanted to make sure you understood that the word "failed" does not imply it in each and every case - as Daniel Mtz explained below.)

He leído el original, la traducción ofrecida por clau_fier y los otras traducciones y comentarios por lo menos 10 veces. Es mi opinión que sí, fallaron a no cuestionar sus suposiciones sobre el comunismo y sí, sale aquí en forma de crítica o condena. Igual que Jutta, prefiero suposición. A menudo fallar no se traduce pero, en este contexto es importante para expresar el lapso en su razonamiento, es lo que quería decir el escritor en inglés.
