Roman alphabet Users of both the Shahmukhi script and the Gurumukhi script please also transcribe your entries into Roman alphabet. For example: ਵੰਡਣਾ = vaḍaṇā or ونڈی پاؤنا = Vandi paona. So everyone will be able to read the others entries.
Tejinder Soodan Aug 6, 2010:
The words ਨਿਯਤ or ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ alone do not give the correct meaning. It should be ਨਿਯਤ ਕਰਨਾ or ਨਿਰਧਾਰਤ ਕਰਨਾ।
Sajid Nadeem Aug 5, 2010:
کوئ چیز کسے لئ وکھری کرکے کے رکھنا
It is almost a complete sentense with the same meanings of word "ونڈی پاؤنا".
Sajjad Hamadani (asker) Aug 5, 2010:
another suggestion in Shahmukhi کوئ چیز کسے لئ وکھری کرکے کے رکہنا
Please feel free to post in Shahmukhi (Urdu script) if you cannot type in Gurumukhi.
Sajid Nadeem Aug 5, 2010:
Well Mr.Nitin is right in his view. Allocate means ਨਿਯਤ also. But as it is from sansikrat and better substitutes are available in "Shudh Punjabi" that are ਵੰਡੀ ਪਾਉਣਾ, or ਮਿਥਣਾ. So I prefer my suggested words for this term. By the way correct spellings of "Neeat" which means "intention" is ਨੀਅਤ not ਨੀਯਤ.
Nitin Goyal Aug 5, 2010:
So, it does not mean "intention". Right?

The words suggested by my friend from Pakistan may also be tried in Shabdkosh:
ਵੰਡਣਾ, ਵੰਡੀ ਪਾਉਣਾ, ਨਿਸ਼ਚਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ, ਮਿਥਣਾ
Sajjad Hamadani (asker) Aug 5, 2010:
ਨਿਯਤ Well the term "ਨਿਯਤ" in Shabdkosh gives the following back translation meanings:

1. fixed
2. appointed
3. settled
4. prescribed
5. established
6. assigned
Nitin Goyal Aug 5, 2010:
The word which means "intention" is "ਨੀਯਤ", and not "ਨਿਯਤ".
ਨਿਯਤ definitely means "Allocate".
Sajjad Hamadani (asker) Aug 5, 2010:
The word ਨਿਯਤ or نیت ( نِيَّة ) came from the Arabic language which really means “intention”. What do you think of this one? A Pakistani Punjabi suggested "نویکلا کرناں یا کسے دے ناویں چڑہاںڑاں "
