Norwegian term

båtleilighet

Norwegian to English Art/Literary Transport / Transportation / Shipping
The time period is 1938, and it is a question of how best to travel from Norway to England.

(next available) passage by boat

Riksmålsordbok's definition of leilighet includes:
"2
a ytre omstendigheter), vilkår som gjør noget mulig ell. passende; anledning (2); høve (1 b): jf. leilighetstyv .
// .
// litt. gi leilighet til gi anledning (1) til, fremkalle .

In essence, it seems to mean the possibility to travel on a boat/ship after having waited for such an opportunity.

It would have to be re-worded, I think, to something like: " He wanted to wait a few days and secure the next available passage by boat.."

agree William [Bill] Gray : Excellent re-wording, Brigid! (would you ever spell that word without the hyphen?)

available space on a ship

I think "leilighet" her is not about an apartment or a cabin/berth.
it refers to the opportunity or occasion to take the next available boat...
