_______
There is already a Glossary entry for "assise", but none of the suggestions posted there really fits here.
The text is about Christian Dior and his colleague, the illustrator René Gruau, shortly to become the subjects of an exhibition.
Clearly, the "notions d’équilibre, d’assise" both relate to their early architectural aspirations.
Any suggestions for "assise" in particular would be most welcome - many thanks!

Note from asker:
perhaps, given the context, I should amend "foundations" to "foundation" sans "S"! |

Comment: "many thanks everybody for all your help! The client seems very happy with this suggestion. I realise that it is a "generalizing translation" (or hyperonym), but sometimes one has to fall back on these.
I was originally looking for something more akin semantically to "foundations", but could find nothing that really fitted in the context of haute couture design."

More the idea I think, also in regards to the working relationship of the two men.

architectural term ASSISE can't find English equivalent, maybe stratifications or just masonry
The height of the foundation varies in the mediaeval buildings because of the quality of materials which could have constructors. Everyone knows that occur in limestone soil, with benches arranged more or less thick. The architects of the Middle Ages had the good sense to modify their construction due to the natural height of these benches. They thus avoided the waste of stone that are so expensive now that you submit the claims to some form of stone architecture often disagree with the height of natural stone benches. Manufacturers prior to the renaissance did not know the timber that can charge a limestone bed in a more or fewer seats. The stone was used as the gave careers, so the natural height of the foundation did a considerable influence on the shape of the architecture of the buildings of the same era (see: Construction ). Construction ).

just had another look at all possibilities and thinking perhaps "layering" might get the stratification aspect of assises and also be part of haute couture???
