Stromtankstelle / Ladestation

German to English Marketing Energy / Power Generation charging of electric cars
Is there a difference between these two terms? It seems that they both mean "charging station," where the car's battery is recharged.

Zudem ermöglicht die Technologie in Zukunft die Einbindung der Stromtankstelle in ein größeres Netzwerk aus Ladestationen.

Thanks for any help.

context There's no more technical information. This is marketing copy, not technical. But I think you may be right, and Andrew should put it up as an answer.

@Susan Not necessarily. As Andrew hints to ... Assuming there is a technology (need more context) that provides a network of charging "points" for public and private use (e.g taxis, company fleets) then the "Stromtankstellen" might represent the public facilities, analogous to petrol stations.

Distinction Yes, Phillee, I think there must be a distinction of some sort. The Wikipedia article on Ladestation (see Birgitte's references, above) shows a picture of an electrical toothbrush charger! That would tend to suggest that a Ladestation is a single unit, but a Stromtankstelle is a business establishment for the purpose (like a "filling station" or "gas station"). However, my source sentence sounds sort of the other way around. :-(

Possible distinction Stromtankstelle: Run on a commercial basis and open to all-comers, just like a petrol(Br) / gas (Am) station
Ladestation: Any place where an e-vehicle can charge up, including private company facilities ('Station' is thus something of a falscher Freund here). For example, a fleet of taxis would require its own Ladestation but the general public would not be welcome.

In fact, they are not interchangeable in this context.

This is a linguistic monstrosity extracted from a dictionary that would never be adopted for general use.

Most native speakers seem to agree that the two terms are very close; that the Stromtankstelle is a facility, like a gas station or service station, which has chargers for electric cars (the service can be either free or for a fee, so it's not exactly operated on a commercial basis); and that the Ladestation is the physical unit, which could be in a service station or could be in your garage or along the street. I suspect that terminology in this field will become more "locked in" when there are more electric or hybrid cars around, and that right now the language is somewhat in flux.
