safraleine
is Givaudan's latest take on saffron, a perfume ingredient. This being a brand name, I would not attempt to translate it.
Note from asker:
many thanks for your help Swisstell, but it isn't a brand name. But it is indeed a perfume ingredient |
Or perhaps I should have said "as far as I know" it isn't a brand name! In any case, in this context, it is an ingredient in another perfume |
I now see what you mean - the penny has finally dropped! Safraleine is the name of the molecule created by Givaudan, which I suppose makes it a brand name. It appears on French sites with the é, and on English sites with either your spelling or Claire's... |

Comment: "many thanks everybody! In the end, I found this spelling on the English version of the official Givaudan site - which clinched it for me!"

The Scoop
The premise of 888, yet another spectacular Comme des Garçons creation, is as original and unexpected as we came to expect from this truly avant-garde line: to translate the smell of gold into perfume. Centered on safraline, a molecule derived from the most golden of all spices, saffron, 888 expresses the paradoxical appeal of gold with astounding success.

Brilliant! Thank you Claire! So similar, yet I couldn't find any bilingual sites. This gets quite a few g-hits - enough to convince me, at least! |

safraline
It is rather a commercial name given to a molecule derivated from saffron. Not to be confused with Safralite, which is a brand name for a certain medication obtained from saffron extract nor with safranine which is a chemical indicator.
Note from asker:
many thanks for the help Horea, although the most relevant part of your answer (about the molecule) duplicates what Claire and Swisstell had already posted :) |
