English term

beer gut

Non-PRO English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
If you’ve ever heard men jokingly refer to that excess weight around their middle section as their “spare tires” “beer gut”, or “love handles”, - but that’s where the joke ends.

What is the concept of "beer gut" and "love handles" in this concept?

Thanks and regards,

Chopra

Dec 5, 2010 08:23: Tony M changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Sabine Akabayov, PhD, Ildiko Santana, Tony M

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

It is a fat belly, but not necessarily due to beer There can be many reasons why a person has excess weight in their abdominal area, but it isn't necessarily because they drink beer - it's most likely due to the fact that they eat too much...

typo Please read "in this case" instead of "in this concept".

"spare tire" is the same idea (comes from the extra tire (US)/tyre (UK) that you have in your car in case one of the tires/tyres on your vehicle bursts and has to be replaced ... a metaphor for excess fat around your midriff
