Yvonne Gallagher Jan 30, 2011:
Your first example is called an "unlisted number (US) and "ex-Directory number" (UK) not private number(at least I never saw it called that in the context.

A telephone directory (also called a telephone book and phone book) is a listing ... number is then said to be "unlisted" (American English), "ex-directory" ... A reverse telephone directory is sorted by number, which can be looked up ...

Lydia De Jorge (asker) Jan 29, 2011:
In the US, a private number is a number that is not listed in the phone book or directory. Also, if one dials *67 prior to dialing the desired number, the caller's number is hidden from the receiver.

Yvonne Gallagher Jan 29, 2011:
absolutely agree with David's point about "anonymous" implying some sort of menace or threat. I have heard/seen "private number" used on both sides of Atlantic to describe a call where the number is not seen or "witheld".
David Ronder Jan 29, 2011:
Anonymous to me suggests more than just what we call in the UK a "withheld number" - an anonymous caller does not say who they are and an element of menace is usually implied.

What's the US equivalent of a withheld number? Maybe gallegy2's suggestion? I just don't know.
Lydia De Jorge (asker) Jan 28, 2011:
Ok, I think I get it. When my cellphone receives calls from unidentified numbers, it displays "Restricted". So I suppose 'anonymous call' would be the most accurate way to say this. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and explanations!
SLG Jan 28, 2011:
I would suggest "calls from hidden numbers"
Lydia De Jorge (asker) Jan 28, 2011:
Thanks Luximar, But what is a hidden call? Maybe it's something completely obvious but it totally escapes me..
Luximar Arenas Petty Jan 28, 2011:
I suggest... hidden.

anonymous calls

It is called oculta because the caller's name and phone are hidden.

Another term is "unknown caller".

Sometimes you will see them arrive on your caller ID that says
"ANOYMOUS CALL" OR "UNKNOWN CALLER".

Both are hiding their identities for whatever reason.

It isn't necessary a private number call. Sometimes they don't want you to know who is calling.

without ID

The proper term would be 'non-CID', referring to 'CID' (caller ID), which displays the caller's number (or other ID) so the person receiving the call can decide whether or not to answer:

In your context, however, 'without ID' would be more appropriate.

private number calls basically means the number is blocked so you don't know who is calling, a lot of direct marketers use this as a device to get you answering the phone!
