: Re "interactive":"Gekurbelt, gedreht und gedrückt" should clinch it for "hands-on".

Exhibits
Exhibits in Museums and Science Centres can be divided into three groups.
1. Static exhibits
2. Hands-on exhibits
3. Interactive exhibits
1. Static exhibits
Static or traditional exhibits are there to look at and occasionally to listen to. Generally visitors are not allowed to touch them. The information about a specific subject is transferred visually and / or orally.
2. Hands-on exhibits
Hands-on exhibits may be touched, picked up and investigated. The actions of the visitor do not or rather, should not, change the exhibit.
“ Touch is a key component in growing, learning, communicating and living. Touch is the first if the five senses to develop, and is far more developed than hearing or seeing in newborns.” (Ratey, 2001. p. 76.)
Good hand-on exhibits should be appealing and engaging. They must also be robust and hygienic.
3. Interactive exhibits
Interactive exhibits allow visitors to explore and experiment around a theme, normally around more than one concept. The actions of the visitor can change the configuration of the exhibit. Interactive active exhibits often engage more than one sense of the visitor. Interactive exhibits need good instructions to enable visitors of all ages to explore the exhibit.
Good interactive science exhibits should be appealing, engaging, thought provoking and empowering. They should connect with the visitor's existing knowledge and relate to some real life application. They should also connect with the subject of the exhibition and with other exhibits in the vicinity.

I don't know whether a 'Mitmachexponat' is a hands-on exhibit or an interactive exhibit. If you do, it would be a good idea to help the asker by posting an answer.

: Hi Smiley. I guess if the author had meant 'interaktive Exponate', there would have been no reason not to write it. The nature and makeup of the word 'Mit-mach' is similar to that of 'hands-on', suggesting that this is the required register. Regards. AJS
