Lo que no entiendo es porqué utilizan "yardas" como medida de capacidad.

Cristian tiene razón, por lo general los movimientos de tierra se expresan en alguna unidad de volumen (por ejemplo, yardas cúbicas).
Pero quizás aquí se considere conocida la superficìe del volumen que desplaza el tornillo y por lo tanto con el recorrido alcance. No me atrevería a asegurar que en inglés se hayan olvidado de la palabra "cúbica" sin consultarlo con el cliente.
La capacidad se mide en yardas (medida de longitud) porque se refiere a lo que avanza el material movido por el tornillo.

I hope that you looked at the references I provided and realize that a screw conveyor has nothing to do with a "banda". Good luck with your translation.
