Spanish term

gancho de palo

Spanish to English Social Sciences Anthropology Navarre: 18th century // Essay by Julio Caro Baroja
The context here is a description of a physical altercation in 18th century Navarre:

La discusión se puso grave y Etchebarren descargó la rastra “con violencia y de authoridad propia”, echando de mala manera los helechos. Después, se marchó y cuando Garratxia con su hijo Felipe Manuel se dispuso a cargar de nuevo la rastra, volvió Etchebarren con un **gancho de palo** e intentó darle un golpe en la cabeza.

Discussion

Eliza Wright Apr 6, 2011:
gancho de palo It sounds like some kind of a pole with a hook on the end. Maybe with more context you could figure out what kind of a hooked stick it is. Is it a skythe, weed hook, tenterhook, sickle, one of those things that look like sticks with machetes on the ends of them? I mean, if this takes place at sea, or on a plantation in Cuba, you might be able to be more specific with your choice of vocabulary.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "A stick containing "a hook that can be used to bend branches within reach" seems to be what fits the context here. Thank you, Liz. Thanks also to Jenni and Edward."

(hooked) wooden staff

I'm not sure that the "hooked" part is necessary for the purposes of the text - this suggestion would be clear to the final reader...

pole hook

Whether it was connected to a pole I don't know, but this would make sense in any case as until quite recently the wooden shafts of tools were replaced and one often saw the metal sections stored or stashed in various locations.
