Después, se marchó y cuando Garratxia con su hijo Felipe Manuel se dispuso a cargar de nuevo la rastra, volvió Etchebarren con un **gancho de palo** e intentó darle un golpe en la cabeza.

I'm not sure that the "hooked" part is necessary for the purposes of the text - this suggestion would be clear to the final reader...

Whether it was connected to a pole I don't know, but this would make sense in any case as until quite recently the wooden shafts of tools were replaced and one often saw the metal sections stored or stashed in various locations.
