niveau de controle

français vers anglais Sciences sociales Org / dév. / coop internationale Aid projects
Same report as before..... innovations to farming practice

Les innovations peuvent avoir une origine
- scientifique avec des insertions dans les réalités culturelles, sociales et économiques des producteurs suite à des expérimentations à échelles et *niveaux de contrôle* variés ;

the sense is clear but I am not sure what the best translation is ....these trials are "on different scales and with varying levels of control/evaluation/verification ".... or what

Thanks in advance

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): cc in nyc

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) May 8, 2011:
@ nikki no further indication in this part (maybe 10 pages further on ? ;-) ) but the 'innovations' introduced can be either 'scientific' (from researchers) - the quote I gave - or "rural (from farmers), to be replicated in a variety of places and situations " and may regard either practice or organization. So the 'controls' are likely to be of a scientific nature but no info as to exactly what or how, I'm afraid
Nikki Scott-Despaigne May 8, 2011:
And an idea of what and how (method) is being "contrôlé" would help. Perhaps it is not specified. "Contrôle" is one of those catch-all words which can mean a whole host of things, sometimes all at the same time :
inspection, assessment, monitoring, surveillance, control...
B D Finch May 8, 2011:
Not "officialese" Your text is about experiments and needs to be interpreted and translated accordingly, i.e. the language is scientific not "officialese".
Lorraine Buckley (X) (asker) May 8, 2011:
@ Segolene That's right, that is the meaning, but as we are talking official international reports, I am looking for the best 'officialese' most commonly used for the phrase, This is also why (@cc in nyc) I consider it a pro question: anyone can translate the 3 words 'niveau de controle' but is 'level of control' or 'control level' the best translation? Possibly not. Thanks to both for contributions anyhow
chaplin May 8, 2011:
what I understand is there are various check levels which ahve been carried out as well as scales experiments. Good luck!

control level

The control is a sample not subjected to the experimental variable. It is the variation from the control that indicates whether or not the experimental variable has an effect. This is not managerial "monitoring and control".

"Total mercury level in hens given 20 mg Hg/kg body weight in capsules rose sharply in kidney, liver, and ovarian follicle samples. Soon after administration, these levels decreased rapidly, approaching control levels 2 weeks after administration. Compared to control birds, hens treated with 20 mg Hg/kg body weight in capsules showed significant decreases in egg hatchability, eggshell thickness, chick weight, ..."

Thanks Alistair
neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : The explanation relates to statistical terminology from experimental design : control, sample, variable, experimental variable...// Your example describes control subjects as opposed to test subjects in an experiment, scientific but does not fit here.

This is not just statistical. I think you are wrong, it is a statement about use of various control levels. These are levels in the control population. Perhaps you are confusing this with confidence levels.

different levels of monitoring and control.
Note from asker:
thanks for your contribution, which I am sure would also have been ok. In the end I went with the other proposal because it fitted better with the text which followed. But thanks a lot

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : The original makes it difficult to attribute a particular meaning to the temr in context. THis works for covering a range of meanings and reads perfectly well.
