Context: From an informative leaflet on historical archives in Mallorca. From a list of collections of records.

Casa de Socorro 1908-1935
2. UNIVERSITAT DE LA CIUTAT

My client clarified thus:

Las "Casas de Socorro" eran entidades de beneficiencia que acogían a los necesitados.

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_de_socorro

So this would be a refuge or charitable hospital of some kind, but I just can't think of what would be the most appropriate translation.

UK Eng. Thanks in advance.

Casa de Socorro - shelter for the homeless

OR: Casa de Socorro - shelter for the needy

Casa de Socorro - home for the needy

As the heading is capitalised, I'd treat it as a proper name, so leave it untranslated. But I do think it needs glossing - which can of course also be done using brackets if you prefer

refuge for the dispossessed

I would say this fits your description. A first-aid post is the modern meaning.

Esta es la traducción literal. Sin embargo, sí que podría referirse a las antiguas casas de socorro en España, que recogían a niños huérfanos y personas desamparadas. En este caso, se podría traducir por "charity hostel/refuge". Saludos.

poorhouse

In your historical context, this might be roughly equivalent, although the poorhouse or workhouse is perhaps an older concept.

Orphanage and Refuge/Shelter

it seems this was mostly for orphans so adding Refuge or Shelter for older homeless. Back then in UK these would have been separate institutions for the children and adults

or maybe just HOUSE OF REFUGE
