I Forgive

Non-PRO English to German Social Sciences Religion
Hi, everyone. My boss needs to know how to say "Yo Perdono" (I Forgive) in German. There is no more context. She will use such sentence as the name of a campaign. The important thing is to keep the subject for emphasis, to show that I am the one who forgive, and that I will enjoy the benefits of forgiveness. Behind "I forgive", there's an underlying "I choose to forgive". A friend of mine (non-native) said that it could be "ich verzeihe". I would really appreciate confirmation on this. Thank you in advance.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): AllegroTrans, Steffen Walter, Vera Wilson

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Usch Pilz Dec 27, 2011:
Most German bible translations favour 'vergeben' ("Herr vergib ihnen, denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun.") rather than 'verzeihen'. If you want to stress the biblical/spiritual aspect.

ich vergebe

This is another, maybe better option to "ich verzeihe", with more of a religious background.
What is this campaign about?

Good luck with your campaign.
Note from asker:
Hi, Vera. Thank you very much for your answer. This campaign is intended to foster forgiveness. It's about choosing to forgive over not doing it. Let's say a group of people is asked what they do when they are insulted. One of them says, "I insult back", while another one says, "I forgive". That's the "I forgive" we need. Is it any clearer? Thank you all!

Danke!
agree Horst Huber (X) : Völlig offen, ohne Bestimmung oder Einschränkung. Ich nehme an, hier ist nicht die priesterliche Formel gesucht, "Ich sprech dich los ..".

ich gewähre Vergebung

just an idea to strech the "I choose to forive"-part.
Literally translated it means: I grant forgiveness

ich kann vergeben

Translated: "I am able to forgive."

Because forgiveness doesn't come easy.
Peer comment(s):

agree Annett Hieber : Mit dem "kann" wäre das "underlying to choose to forgive" berücksichtigt.

m.E. vergibt Gott, aber die Menschen unter sich verzeihen eher.
