Discussion

Ron Hartong PhD (X) Apr 19, 2012:
Hi Emma, I agree with you that hip fracture in an RTA is quite possible. The way I read the report though, I assumed that the patient entered the hospital with a PTC, whatever that may be. I thought this mainly because the next sentence starts with 'Ha recibido' - they don't say something along the lines of 'Ha recibido PTC derecha'.
On the other hand, like I said, I had difficulties finding Pseudotumor Cerebri' together with right/... etc. (BTW, the same holds true for Primary Trauma Care).

Bottom line, I find it a bit confusing. As you said, best to check with the client. Should this be impossible, I would give whatever translation I like best and put in a translator's note proposing (an) alternative translation(s).
Emma Goldsmith Apr 19, 2012:
Hip/Brain injury I agree with your reasoning, Ron, but I think that brain injury and a hip fracture is quite plausible in a road traffic accident.
This needs to be checked with the client, if possible.

PTC I don't have time to really dig into this now, but given that they are talking about TCE (traumatismo craneoencefálico/craneocerebral = head injury or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)) I would think that PTC does not refer to hip replacement (although it's not impossible either).
In conjunction with TBI, 'Pseudotumor Cerebri' is often mentioned; this is abbreviated both in Spanish and in English as PTC, see e.g.

My problem is that I got very few hits for 'Pseudotumor Cerebri' together with right/right hemisphere/right-sided, etc.
