Thank you to both I had to send this off this morning, and I used 'streaky' which seems to be used quite often in this context. Whether it is right or wrong it is too late now!

considering that source uses the word in quotation marks, it is likely used in a descriptive manner, rather than being an exact medical term. Tattered will do fine for cárovitý

agree Jiri Lonsky : zřetelně jde o odborně užitý termín, ale je těžko říct jestli vyjadřuje to co autor myslel pojmem "cárovitý"
