English term

title relating to my Master's degree

English Other Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs
Hi, I have a question related to the field ''additional information'' in my c.v.

I would like to know if I put a piece of information in brackets correctly. To be precise, I put my dissertation title and then an additional phrase in brackets. This is as follows :

The Greenhouse Effect: problems, causes and possible solutions (dissertation title relating to my Master's degree).

Is the form ''Master's degree'' I used correct or should I change into ''Master degree course''?

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Rosario Liberto (asker) Nov 6, 2012:
Thanks a lot for clearing that Charles.
Charles Davis Nov 6, 2012:
Just to be clear, if you intend to present your CV in the UK or Ireland, put "dissertation", and if you are going to send it to the US or Canada, put "thesis".
Rosario Liberto (asker) Nov 6, 2012:
Thanks everybody, the target language is English, I am translating from Italian into English and the university where i got my Master's degree is in italy.
Donna Stevens Nov 6, 2012:
thesis vs dissertation The big question is this: What is the target language? UK, US, CAN, etc? Where is the university located?
Charles Davis Nov 6, 2012:
thesis vs. dissertation The confusion to which Donna has referred is entirely a matter of different usage in the UK and Ireland versus the US and Canada. In the UK and Ireland, a dissertation is presented for a master's degree and a thesis for a doctorate. In the US and Canada, it is exactly the other way round: you write a master's thesis and a doctoral dissertation. So you need to bear in mind your target audience when using these terms.

In Australia usage seems to vary, though I think the UK pattern of master's dissertation and doctoral thesis is more usual. Perhaps an Australian colleague can tell us.

Do not use the word "course" here unless you want to tell the reader that you failed your Master's.

Thanks Charles. I didn't know that it was the other way round in the US. In the UK you can even do a dissertation for your first degree, as I did.

Master's degree thesis

There is a lot of confusion between the terms dissertation and thesis. You write a dissertation when you do your PhD. A thesis is done for a Master's degree.
Example sentence:

If you think it's hard writing your Master's thesis, just wait until you start on your PhD dissertation.

Thanks a lot everybody.

agree Lorna Bleach : If target is US/Canada, but if the target is UK, then you write your thesis for your Ph.D and a dissertation for your Masters
