The capital of the Bank is subscribed by member governments, which now number 109, in accordance with their economic strength. Only about one tenth of the subscribed capital ($22,900 million in June 1968) has been paid-up, the remainder being at call if required by the Bank to meet its obligations on borrowings or on loans guaranteed by it. Borrowings in world capital markets are the main source of the Bank's resources, the guarantee afforded by the Bank's capital structure making it possible to mobilise private capital through bond issues.
