Second sentence: I don't understand what is happening... I'm guessing that
the flask with the powder in it is held over a flame until it ignites and then put in an 800-degree oven? Is that correct?
How would that normally be said (my phrase in question)?
And does the word "flashpoint" come in here somewhere?

I'm pretty ignorant about chemistry and pharmaceutical production techniques, but this is what I think it's saying and I'm posting this answer in case it helps.
Not too many examples, but here's one online sentence: "For total alkali evaporate a measured volume to dryness in a platinum dish and ignite over a flame till the organic matter is completely carbonized. "

The way I read it, "a la llama" means by means of/using/ a flame (as you read it, Lesley).
