judge the distance

I think "judging the distance" would sound natural here. Although the context suggests that it is metaphorical, the metaphor works in English as well. "Midiendo" is estimating; "measuring" would imply actually using a measuring device. "Distance" should be singular, I think; the plural wouldn't work in English.
