Shooting Miters
With large miters, it’s important to have an
exceptionally smooth cut to provide the bestpossible
gluing surface. If you use a sharp
handplane, you’ll produce a surface quality
unmatched by any other tool. And a plane is a
great tool for fine-tuning a miter that’s a little
off. To hold the stock and control the cut, use
a jig to “shoot” the miter, as shown here (A).
Position the molding in the jig slightly proud of
the jig’s mitered fence and clamp or hold the
piece in place
