Spanish term

Ecografía lumbar

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
Hello

I need to say someone is due for a "ecografía lumbar" in English.

(It is a follow up exam for thyroid cancer).

Is it an "ultrasound","sonography", or what other English word should I use?

If it helps, I'd prefer UK English.
Thanks

That's strange Are you sure you spelled it correctly? My Google search just now yielded 3 pages of references for "ultrasound of the lumbar spine" and 8 pages of references for "lumbar spine ultrasound" - both U.S. (e.g., Duke University, Stanford University) and U.K. sites.
Denise Soria (asker) Sep 18, 2013:
Hi, Thank you for all the comments. I googled "ultrasound of the lumbar spine" and got no results, then "lumbar spine ultrasound" showed only 3 results. Both only in UK sites. Hmm....

ultrasound/sonogram of the lumbar spine

Many, many references for 'ultrasound of the lumbar spine"; also 'sonogram':

... a final section currently under development which will allow users to perform a simulated ultrasound of the lumbar spine in preparation for spinal anesthesia.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, Muriel! It was very helpful. The only thing I don't understand why there are only 3 results in google of "ultrasound of the lumbar spine". Maybe it is not much discussed in google. Thanks!"

lumbar zone ecography

This is the explanation
Peer comment(s):

neutral Helena Chavarria : I'm sorry but I've never heard people talking about ecographies. People refer to (ultrasound) scans, but I am not a specialist and I don't want to risk giving a wrong answer.

agree eVeritas : The right spelling is "echography" but this term is also used besides sonogram and ultrasound.

lumbar scan

= An "ultrasound scan" of the lumbar region.
An ultrasound scan (sonogram) is a procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of part of the inside of the body.

I recently translated a manual on it and the accepted terms used to refer to "ecografía" were:
ultrasound scan;
ultrasonography;
sonography.

In conversation, most of the time the professionals just refer to the "scan" or "scanning" once the specific type (usually ultrasound or MRI in this case) is established.

ultrasound of the lumbar spine

You should use the term "ultrasound" since it refers to the process by which you get a as result the "sonogram".

The "sonogram" is the image that appears as a result of the ultrasound process.
