Przecież podobno

polski > angielski Literatura/sztuka Poezja i literatura Przecież podobno
Współpraca stale się rozwija - mimo różnego rodzaju trudności, nieporozumień i różnic kulturowych. Przecież podobno cywilizacja europejska jest kwadratowa a chińska kulista.

Jak to przetłumaczyć, żeby brzmiało po angielsku?

Mi też jakiś dziwnie bliski mike23 się wydał... pokój zwierzeń numer 44 :-)
George BuLah (X) Nov 24, 2013:
I'm also having my German distant ancestors, hence the "23" had always seemed to me that close... on I arrived in here ;)

Dear Ms. Tereska Macioł. Mr Dariusz Saczuk had a viable contender here with his "But, apparently," which was the first entrant in this category. It does have the right nuance of pointing to something that is common lore but of dubious provenance. It may be exactly what you are looking for, so please keep it in mind.
Serenadele Nov 24, 2013:
mike23, godna podziwu pasja :)

no nie 'wytrzymie" ... pszczoły o tej porze roku? no użarła mnie jedna... a prosiłam Darka... mój trzeci głos ma iść na zmarnowanie?
jak sobie je na Tobie zaczepię, to przynajmniej nie będą głodne... nie mogę wszystkich głosów żywić... miałeś się nimi zająć, a nie odrzucać... i gdzieś się ukrywać... Ci mężczyźni ;)!
mike23 Nov 24, 2013:
The latter one ;) I inherited the passion from my German born grandma
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Nov 24, 2013:
You must be in the diplomatic core, mike23, or are an ardent apiarist...or both.
mike23 Nov 24, 2013:
Cross-pollination is good, if done by such busy bees as we are.

btw. In a fast-paced interpretation, which I do sometimes, I would probably say sth shortish like "Supposedly, the European civilization is square-shaped whereas the Chinese one is said to be round"
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Nov 24, 2013:
To jest więcej niż pogłoska. To jest jakaś obserwacja filozoficzna,
geopiet Nov 24, 2013:
rumor has it that .... :)
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Nov 23, 2013:
A suggestion:
But, after all, even though apparently - and supposedly - the European civilization is square-shaped and purportedly the Chinese is said to be round...
There is a bit of cross-pollination going on here, don't you think?

After all, ... is said to be...

Another option, only because I don't like 'supposedly' in this context...

Dzieki :)
neutral LilianNekipelov : It does not fit within the context, as a translation of the Polish sentence -- it would mean something else.

I just followed the asker's instruction "zeby brzmialo po angielsku". I take this to mean "what a native speaker (Brit, in this case) would say to express the meaning. I've asked the one I have at home and he agrees :)

Supposedly, (the European civilization is square...and

You do not even need "but," because "supposedly" has already introduced the element of doubt.

Supposedly- believed or reputed to be the case
according to what is generally assumed or believed

Another line of thought:
But they say that/But some say that/Some hold that/It is thought that

This is an "impersonal they" in the sense of "it is said/claimed." So, here we have a disembodied opinion.
Peer comment(s):

neutral LilianNekipelov : I don't fully agree with this suggestion either.

Half-agree then? Thank you, Lilian.
agree mike23 : Well, I do. "Supposedly" grasps it nicely

Thank you, mike23. I am glad you grasped the nuance and the economy of this deceptively simple word.
agree George BuLah (X) : :)))) ... "half-agree" :))) ... you make my Sunday, Frank. Thanks :))

After all, supposedly, (...)

Można połączyć w ten sposób dwa przysłówki, unikając rozbicia tej frazy.

After all, supposedly, the European civilisation is square while the Chinese one is round.
Peer comment(s):

neutral LilianNekipelov : How would you translate the sentence using your suggested phrase?

The way I wrote above. There is nothing wrong in combining two adverbs at the front of a sentence, it just doesn't happen too often.
