Współpraca stale się rozwija - mimo różnego rodzaju trudności, nieporozumień i różnic kulturowych. Przecież podobno cywilizacja europejska jest kwadratowa a chińska kulista.

Jak to przetłumaczyć, żeby brzmiało po angielsku?

It does have the right nuance of pointing to something that is common lore but of dubious provenance. It may be exactly what you are looking for, so please keep it in mind.

btw. In a fast-paced interpretation, which I do sometimes, I would probably say sth shortish like "Supposedly, the European civilization is square-shaped whereas the Chinese one is said to be round"

I just followed the asker's instruction "zeby brzmialo po angielsku". I take this to mean "what a native speaker (Brit, in this case) would say to express the meaning. I've asked the one I have at home and he agrees :)

You do not even need "but," because "supposedly" has already introduced the element of doubt.


Supposedly- believed or reputed to be the case
according to what is generally assumed or believed


Another line of thought:
But they say that/But some say that/Some hold that/It is thought that

This is an "impersonal they" in the sense of "it is said/claimed." So, here we have a disembodied opinion.

Można połączyć w ten sposób dwa przysłówki, unikając rozbicia tej frazy.

The way I wrote above. There is nothing wrong in combining two adverbs at the front of a sentence, it just doesn't happen too often.
