Portuguese term

Cumprimos para exigir, exigimos para cumprir

Portuguese to English Bus/Financial Marketing / Market Research Company slogan
Hi all,
Having trouble putting this into elegant, succint English.
It's a company report where they describe what they do and their commitment to quality and high ethical standards.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Margarida Martins Costelha (asker) Dec 27, 2013:
Thank you, everyone I'd like to thank all of you for your thoughtful contributions. This was a difficult one to disentangle, but with your help I know what to do now :)
Marlene Curtis Dec 26, 2013:
You could also use the word demand in the plural form.
For us, compliance and demands go hand-in-hand.
coolbrowne Dec 26, 2013:
Muito obrigado Com base neste entendimento, passou a ser possível montar uma tradução razoável (que evita o problema causado pelo uso de "demand")
Margarida Martins Costelha (asker) Dec 26, 2013:
What I undestand it to mean That the company complies to the highest standards demanded in the industry, while also demanding the best from itself in order to comply with those standards - more or less what some of you said. I hope this helps...
coolbrowne Dec 26, 2013:
It is not clear I agree with Robert Forstag that, though it can be found in a dictionary, "demand" would be confusing in what appears to be a commercial setting. However, that point may be rendered moot if we get useful information from the asker. In fact I had assumed (my fault) that the explicit reference to knowledge of the context would make it clear that the question was specifically for the asker; I am actually hoping the she has understood the intention in Portuguese (otherwise, of course, proper translation is impossible) and that she can explain said intended meaning to us.
Marlene Curtis Dec 26, 2013:
Exigir exigir = to demand
exigência = demand
Robert Forstag Dec 26, 2013:
@Marlene The problem here is not with the source Portuguese, but with the ambiguous meaning of "demand" in the translation--an ambiguity that arises within a business/marketing context for reasons that I explained in my previous comment.
Marlene Curtis Dec 26, 2013:
The word "exigir" in the context means to demand, to make demands, and not "procura" (demand) as in "demand and supply" (procura e oferta).
Robert Forstag Dec 26, 2013:
One problem (by no means the only one) with using "demand" in the translation is that this term tends to be used in a business context to express "demand for product" (as in "supply and demand), and this interferes with conveying the meaning intended here.
Marlene Curtis Dec 26, 2013:
Entendo que a companhia cumpre as leis ou regras aplicáveis para poder fazer quaisquer exigências, e exige dos seus empregados para cumpri-las.
coolbrowne Dec 26, 2013:
Não faz mesmo sentido Concordo com Robert Forstag em que a frase, sem o contexto não faz sentido. Conhecendo o contexto, poderia explicá-la? Em outras palavras, dá para perceber o que o autor quer dizer? (Em português claro, em vez de "propagandês")

Obrigado

We adhere to the most uncompromising internal and external standards of [ethical] conduct.

Literally, the Portuguese doesn't seem to make sense (as sometimes proves to be the case with "catchy" marketing slogans) but the intended sense seems to be that the company in question not only adheres to high externally imposed standards, but has internalized very high standards as well (and, thus, those standards are [presumably] "an expression of who they are" rather than simply onerous rules that have to be followed in order to avoid trouble).

As we comply to [strict] requirements so we require [strict] compliance

Based on the additional information and interpretation provided by the asker in the discussion, it seems that they are trying to convey that the firm's high/strict level of compliance gives them sure footing to demand compliance (from employees? other firms?). In any event, the above solution encompasses that idea while keeping to the style of the original. Please choose to use strict or not depending on the rest of the translation, thanks
Note from asker:
Thank you so much, coolbrowne!

We hold ourselves to a high(er) standard... and we deliver

Without trying to reproduce the lovely symmetry (but also, as Robert F rightly points out, dubious logic) of the original, here's my go at conveying its two basic ideas as I see them, namely: 'nos exigimos muito' + 'cumprimos'

https://www.merck.com/about/how-we-operate/home.html‎ : "As a company whose products touch the lives and well being of people around the world, we hold ourselves to a high standard. And we expect others to hold us ..."

www.autotrader.com/dealers/dda/index.jsp?dealership_view... : "At AutoNation Toyota, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Thats why we offer processes and guarantees that make it easier to..."
