Discussion

Michael Ellis Feb 14, 2014:
Shiver me timbers 2 This was a light-hearted attempt to warn that "Sea chest" has meaning.
I never seem to learn that jokes across the language barrier rarely work.
Michael Ellis Feb 12, 2014:
Shiver me timbers! Any old sailor will tell you s/he kept her/is personal possessions onboard in a 'Sea Chest!' (see OED and Miriam-Webster definitions), but my search engine also shows that a sea chest is a space in the bilges of a ship through which seawater can pass for cooling water exchange and similar purposes. So in the context this seems right, but beware - this could be a false friend, but I haven't time for proper research tonight. May try again tomorrow.

"Sea chest" does indeed have more than one meaning; and so does "sjökista". What's your point?
