The DRAE doesn't say that they are ugly only: "pájaro grande desconocido, o cuyo nombre no se sabe"
I prefer large to big in a more literary context.
The DRAE also says that this is "despectivo". However, to add ugly doesn't get that across for me. Depending on your context about the birds, you could say: large awful/horrible birds, but if possible, it'd be better to leave it out, especially as they are screeching - birds that screech aren't nice anyway!

I know the Spanish version does not specify what kind of brids they are but crows screech and make a lot of noise all around.
