English term

real estate

English Other IT (Information Technology)
he New XXX Bar is easier to use, provides more clearly indicated controls, automatically collapses when you’re not using it, taking up less real estate on your screen

Does it simply mean 'Space' here ?
Thanks

agree Tony M : Yup, sure does! 'space' in general so can be hardware 'footprint' in your office / on your desk; but here, the mention of 'screen' makes the meaning unambiguous as you rightly say.

the amount of space available on a display for an application to provide output.

A variation on the concept of real estate, screen estate is the total display area of the monitor(s) connected to a computer, and a subject of bragging rights for computer geeks. Like with real estate, the more/bigger, the better: computer geeks agree that you can never have too much screen estate.

Of the many limitations web designers must deal with screen real estate should be completely understood. Screen real estate refers to the space available to design in. This could be an arbitrary box, but that box might vary depending on the size and resolution of users' computer display. Screen resolution varies from computer to computer, though it can be predicted in part by the age of the computer. Newer computers typically provide the standard screen resolution or higher. Older computers may have much lower resolutions.

The amount of screen real estate a given user may have can vary from 800 pixels wide by 600 pixels high (800x600) to 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high (1024x768), to 1400 pixels wide by 1050 pixels high, and beyond.
