Passing helicopter pilots helideck motion reports based on visual estimations is not considered to be an acceptable way of obtaining vital safety information. It is, therefore, a Company requirement that moving helidecks be equipped with an electronic motion sensing systems located at (attached to the underside of) the helideck or compensated by software to give helideck location readings. The helicopter Operator’s Operations Manual must include a section specifying helideck pitch, roll and heave motion limits for the aircraft. The limitations are to take into consideration day and night operations and any variations applicable to the type of vessel being considered (e.g. drilling ships with differential positioning systems, semi- sub, large ship, small ship, oil tanker mooring buoy), and the location of the helideck (e.g. on small ships the bow deck, stern deck or ***amidships***).
