: I agree, though I prefer the synonym 'smother'. Don't understand the attempts to come up with other translations (and lose the author's imagery) for what is really a quite straightforward phrase.

But "drenched in blood" usually implies the situation reached a fatal end when it is placed with the idea of a revolt/revolution/unrest etc. / I know what "drenched" means, but when used in this context this is what we are implying through usage.
