English term

isinglass sizing

English to French Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng antique restoration
Hello,

I understand that isinglass is a glue made from fish bladder (ichtyocolle ou colle de poisson). Not sure what "sizing" means in this context. Here is the full sentence:

This wallpaper was recreated from an original piece using airbrush techniques, isinglass sizing and damar varnish.

Thanks in advance for your help!

English term (edited): sizing

apprêt

'sizing' here is really a bit of a misnomer; from the contetx given, it seems really to mean 'size' — the priming / surface preparation product manufactured using isinglass

Normally, 'sizing' would mean 'the action of using/applying size'; however, there are certain words in EN where the '-ing' version does have materially the same meaning as the basic noun.

One example might be 'pipe' vs. 'piping' — the distinction there is perhaps between 'one piece of pipe' and 'a system of piping'; but you can see the difference between that and the quite different meaning of 'the action of using a pipe' — as in 'piping the Captain aboard the ship', for example.
