Night atmosphere is described in To kill a mockingbird
The night-crawlers had retired, bu the ripe chinnaberries drummed on the roof when the wind stirred and the darkness was desolate with the barking of distant dogs..
According to dictionaries, night crawlers are earthworms or someone socailly active at night. But how a girl can see earthworm at night and in the era of the novel, it is Great Depression, is it possible to have a night life?
Please enlighten me

nightcrawlers
Night crawlers are popular bait for fishing.
Catching nightcrawlers is an "amusing" sport. Believe me, from summers spent in Iowa, I know there is nothing funnier than watching people pounce to catch one of these worms, much like cats pounce on prey, only to come up empty-handed as the worm darts back into the earth.
I can't now remember if we used flash lights, or just the light of the moon.
I would say that catching nightcrawlers might be considered "night life."
"On cool spring or autumn evenings, just after dusk, nightcrawlers will emerge from their burrows to rest on the surface of the soil and seek mates. This is the best time for catching nightcrawlers. These prolific creatures can often be collected by the thousands on a good night in some areas. Nightcrawlers are relatively easy to catch and can be kept alive for weeks to be used as fishing bait." http://www.livestrong.com/article/135564-tips-catching-night...

Maybe I should have put the quotation marks around "sport" rather than "amusing"..... and added "in certain places" "In certain places (like rural Iowa and Mississippi) catching nightcrawlers might be considered "night life"... There certainly wasn't much else going on. I guess my cousins had a great time watching us city kids making fools of ourselves.
