Norwegian term
samfunnsavdeling
Norwegian to English
Other
Government / Politics
An example (but not from my task):

This department name appears on a certificate from a county governor granting a divorce, so I'm not interested in the alternative use at newspapers to describe their internal organization.

Social Services Department
This seems the simplest translation, although "Social Services and Health Department" is an option.
'Social Services' in UK local government are largely separate from the National Health Service, although there are links - see first reference

Note from asker:
Thanks. This job was for a U.S. client, and over here a "social services" department would not house such a function. I'll keep this in mind for future reference, however. |
