I am currently in Specialist Registrar (SpR) Training Year 5.
By January 2016, I will have completed 7 years of training in anaesthesia in Ireland (this subdivides into 2 years of basic training and 5 years of advanced training in university affiliated hospitals) and a further 6 months of training in general anaesthesia as an interne in France.
As part of my training scheme, I have gained competencies in all subspecialities including a year of dedicated paediatric anaesthesia training in a tertiary referral centre.
Besides modular anaesthesia exposure, working on call at a frequency of 1 in 4 to 1 in 7 nights has formed a vital component of training.
This has included 3 years of on call service in intensive care, 6 months of emergency anaesthesia care in a busy obstetric unit and 2 years as a senior registrar responsible for all patients undergoing emergency surgery out of hours in the operating theatre.
