La posibilidad de solventar la resistencia mediante medios de autoprovisión da cierta autonomía a los grupos locales. El paisaje estuarial permite a las mujeres, cuya expresión de resistencia es la más radicalizada al momento del conflicto, combinar la recolección de orilla con la producción de sus huertas y el comercio, mientras los hombres se hacen cargo de las siembras, la leña, el buceo, el cultivo de choritos (Mytilus chilensis) y la pesca. Los jóvenes se integran a la resistencia en el período estival.

Rocky **shore harvesting** takes place in shell beds
found mostly in the upper-littoral of the fringing reef.
While a wide array ofpossible mollusc resources are found
in rocky shore patches, the Meriam limit their selection
to two prey types: small filter feeding sunset clams
(Asaphis violarcens, sunset clam, which averages about 9
gm of meat per specimen) and small nerites (specifically
Nerita undata, waved nerite, which yields only about 2.5
gm of meat per specimen).
