Mary, how did you translate it in the end?
Helena Chavarria Oct 24, 2015:
In Spanish it's 'pies arbóreos' and in singular it literally means the 'foot of a tree'. My in-laws were fruit farmers and I know a little bit about trees and things. My father-in-law used to buy 'pies', which would act as bases for the adult trees. For example, he would buy a sapling of a tree that had strong roots and then graft a different variety of fruit on the branches, once they were strong enough. He used to experiment with classes of fruit and sometimes he had trees that produced two different types of oranges!

standing trees

Although we say that trees have feet, I don't think it sounds too good if, for example, you have to mention the number of feet in a forest! 'Standing trees' is the only thing that occurs to me right now.

For the optimum exploitation of commercial forests, it is necessary know the volume of the standing trees as precisely as possible. The problem: some morphologically 'extreme’ trunks aren’t easy to measure using traditional techniques.

I think it refers to what English-speaking people simply call trees! It doesn't include bushes or suckers.

Neither does it include trees that have 'planted themselves' from seeds: pine nuts, acorns, etc.
