الواقع أن الفراغ الحاصل في سوريا قد تفاقم من عدة نواحٍ بسبب الإحساس بتقلص دور الولايات المتحدة في المنطقة، مما أوجد فراغاً أكبر فتح المجال أمام نشوء المنافسة المتزايدة بين إيران والسعودية. إذ اعتبر الإيرانيون أن الولايات المتحدة لا تشكل خطراً يذكر عليهم فيما رفعوا درجة أعمالهم القائمة على مذهب الفعّالية في المنطقة ومنحوا «فيلق القدس» - الذراع العملياتي للحرس الثوري الإيراني خارج إيران - دوراً أبرز في الصراعين السوري والعراقي. وبالفعل فإن قائد «فيلق القدس» قاسم سليماني الذي كان في السابق شخصية غامضة، بات اليوم شخصاً ذا حضور علني كبير حيث يظهر أحياناً في الميدان خلال المعارك الدائرة على تكريت في العراق والقصير في سوريا وغيرها من المناطق في كلا البلدين.
