'turn the ignition key' makes more sense - they needed some more software to have a "complete solution" [="un système intégré"] - all that being said in the past tense would suggest that NOW they have all they need to start using this system.

@ Asker I am not familiar with this expression being used this way, but to me, there are 2 possible interpretations that seem to some extent contradictory, although ultimately with the same effect:

1) 'turned the key' behind us to lock the door on our old practices and move onto the new system

2) 'turned the ignition key' to start the engine going.

I think the latter is perhaps the more plausible of the two...

I can't help thinking the real sense behind it is probbaly more something along the lines of 'we hadn't yet taken the plunge..." — e.g. committed fully to a totally electronci system.

The wider context might perhaps make it easier to understand; in particular, who it is that is talking, and in what context — it sounds a bit like some kind of customer testimonial about some new software solution?
