German term

Nebenkostenvoranschlag

German to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) Budgeting, non-profit associations
This term is used (as a title without further explanation) in correspondence from a Swiss home owners' association to its members.

Although I am clear about the meaning of "Nebenkosten", it's the "Voranschlag" that bothers me. Is it a proposal - i.e. the proposed (incidental?) expenses budget - a draft budget or the provisional budget (pending approval, maybe)?

Any help you could give (ideally with a link to a suitable example in English) would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ramey, Right on! Post it as answer.

It is most likely an estimate of maintenance fees.
Jan Liebelt (asker) Nov 22, 2016:
Context If only! The header is the word. The text is essentially "Attached you will find the Nebenkostenvoranschlag for 2017."
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 22, 2016:
Dear Jan the context below the header will give plenty of information about the header. I assume we're talking about a utilities estimation?

service charge estimate / estimate of service charges / estimated service charge(s)

In the context of residential property, 'Nebenkosten' are commonly translated as 'service charges', which is the most generic term - at least in my opinion - that (may) include utilities but also other items such as housekeeping, cleaning, repair/maintenance, property management fees ...

See, for example,

agree writeaway : yes, it is the generic term. Surely this has been asked before? /Ah, it's Swiss so perhaps Vorschlag has to be investigated a bit?/yes I know it's a word used in German-German, but Sw German is always good for a surprise. KISS may be the best option

'Nebenkosten' as such, yes - but perhaps not this particular compound noun. / Not necessarily - it's 'Kostenvoranschlag' (cost estimate), by the way, which is also very common in 'German' German.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'm choosing this answer because I think it comes closest to the intended meaning and broad enough to cover utility and other costs, even though the customer's explanation suggests incorrect/misleading use of the expression "Voranschlag," when what they actually mean is an account/fund: "Der Nebenkostenvoranschlag ist wie ein Akonto, dass wir vorgängig eintreiben, damit wir liquide sind und die fälligen Rechnungen bezahlen können. Die Nebenkosten sind zum Bespiel, Strom Heizung Liegenschaftenunterhalt Hauswartung Abgaben und Gebühren etc.""

utilities billing plan

or perhaps utilities payment arrangement / monthly deposit

Find out if your utility company offers a budget billing plan. This plan allows you to pay a flat fee each month for services and can help you budget your monthly expenses. However, these plans typically require you to eventually pay any amount you've incurred above your flat monthly fee.

neutral Steffen Walter : 'Nebenkosten' encompass more than just utilities - think cleaning, property management fees, upkeep/maintenance etc.

You're right, Steffen.

estimation of maintenance fees/maintenance fees estimation

In any case, I'm rather certain that Voranschlag is an estimation. Whether the Nebenkosten are maintenance, utilities, insurance, etc. is hard to tell.

estimation of ancillary costs

Sounds like a Wohneigentumgemeinschaft - in mine the ancillary costs consist of items like operating costs - e.g. electricity in communal areas, refuse collection, lift costs (for those who use the lift and have keys) contributions to the maintenance fund, cleaning etc.

Maybe more a "Breakdown of ancillary costs" in this context.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Steffen Walter : 'Breakdown' would fail to convey the notion of a 'forward-looking estimate', which is implied here in my opinion.

common charges estimate

Here another possible answer. Although your question actually pertains to "Voranschlag" estimate as the others mentioned would be fine or perhaps even calculation.

estimation of additional costs

I just took the word apart -
Nebenkosten= additional costs
voranschlag= estimation

Hope this helps.
