Hello,

Despite lots of researches, I can not find the French translation of this flower that grows in Japan in winter. If we have an expert here, I'd be grateful for anyhelp. Thank you :-)

@ Asker Armed with that VITAL extra context, here is a picture of said stocks in this garden... perhaps one of our gardening colleagues could identify them from this?

Thank you all for your help. Unfortunately I don't have any context (nor pictures). The complete text is "With canola flowers in spring, verbena in summer, salvia and cosmos in fall, and stock in winter, Awaji’s Hanasajiki features lovely blooming flowers throughout the year." It's part of a travel brochure about the Setouchi area in Japan.

Stocks are common garden flowers in Britain, as Claire says, with several varieties; I have no idea which (if any) of those might be grown in Japan.
Claire Cox Feb 13, 2017:
Can you give us some more context, Cécile. There are at least two kinds of stock: the kind you might buy in a florist (Matthiola) which are tall, hardy annuals, very scented and Virginian stock (Malcomia maritima) which is smaller, more like alyssum or lobelia, but still scented. Also night-scented stock. Can't imagine which of those would be hardy enough to grow in winter in Japan, though.
