Dutch term
Lectoraat / Lector
Dutch to English
Social Sciences
Education / Pedagogy
Dutch Hogeschool (university of applied sciences )
Yes, I know, this could be construed as two terms, but they are highly related, which is why I'm asking them together.
My context: I'm translating a bunch of documents for a Dutch Hogeschool (i.e., a "university of applied sciences" to use the correct NL/EU/English term). My documents are littered with the terms "Lectoraat" and "Lector".
I would love to hear from someone who has actually had to deal with these terms in their own translation work, preferably recently.
Up until recently, I had been translating "lectoraat" as "research group", but then came across as sentence that contained "onderzoeksgroepen en lectoraten", which made me wonder whether I should have chosen something different. "Lectoraat" has been translated in many ways online, some of which are:
• lectorate (OED: The office of lector.)(see: https://www.epnuffic.nl/en/study-and-work-in-holland/dutch-e...
• centre of excellence (A place where the highest standards are maintained: ‘the hospital is a centre of excellence in research and teaching of doctors’)
• research group
• chair (A professorship: ‘he held a chair in physics’)
• professorial chair
• lectureship (A post as a lecturer: ‘a three-year lectureship in English Literature’)
• readership (British: The position of Reader at a university: ‘friends invited him to apply for the Readership’)
• professorship (The office or position of a university professor: ‘he held a professorship in mathematics at the University of Bonn’)
Stenden, translates it as "professorship" here:
https://stenden.com/en/about-stenden/organisation/merger-nhl...
https://stenden.com/over-stenden/organisatie/fusie-nhl-stend...
NUFFIC suggests the following:
lectoraat = lectorate
lector = associate professor, senior lecturer, lector [Source: Hogeschool van Utrecht]
I am also aware of the following related KudoZ question: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/dutch_to_english/education_pedagog...
Although I am not entirely happy with it, so far I have decided to choose to do it as follows:
lectoraat = Lectorate
lector = Lector
note 1: both in italics
note2: I also wrote it as follows, the first time the word ‘Lectorate’ appears: Lectorate (‘Lectoraat’)

Professorship
Hi Michael,
I've been translating in this field for quite some time (also for Stenden). In general they prefer to translate lector into professor, and lectoraat into professorship. I was facing the same issue and several times the editors changed my suggestions into the words I just proposed.
Example sentences:
> "The professorship’s mission is to realise our..."
> “As a professor, I have leading role in..."

Thanks for the useful info Jack! My client still hasn't gotten back to me on this, but when he does I'll be sure to report back here. |

knowledge group
Academy for Tourism NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences
The academy has a research program with three program lines, and each program line is subdivided in themes with associated knowledge groups:
The knowledge groups bring lecturers and associate professors together and they are a useful form of internal knowledge exchange and intellectual growth

Interesting:
Following the Bologna declaration and the consequential ambition of the Netherlands to be one of the leading countries in Europe with regard to education and research, a research function was introduced in the applied universities in 2003. Evidently, research was felt to be a core element of innovation in higher education and professional development, and the applied universities were expected to play a major role in this development. Research in those schools is supposed to aim at strengthening the quality of education, improvement and development of a profession, contribution to innovation and participation in societal and entrepreneurial problem solving and knowledge production.
To accomplish these objectives of the new research function, the specific structure of lectoraten (as a counterpart to research university professorships) was devised, consisting of a lector and a kenniskring (knowledge-group). The research task of the lector differs considerably from the academic scholar. His or her task is to contribute to the education of ‘innovative professionals’ by involvement in curriculum development, training of the teaching staff, circulation of knowledge and the production of new knowledge/doing research. The kenniskring consists of members of the teaching staff who get involved in research and development activities closely related to curriculum development and (regional) societal or entrepreneurial problem solving. In this way, the teaching staff acquires research qualifications and contributes to innovation of the curriculum. Traditionally no research funds were made available to the applied universities by the government. Since 2001 government funds were allocated by the branch organization SKO to the lectoraten on the basis of a set of criteria that meet the goals of the lectoraten (see below). As of 2007, these funds are part of the lump sum of the institutions. In 2009, a national system of research evaluation and monitoring will be in function for the lectoraten. The research function of the universities of applied sciences is expected to develop into regional knowledge centers for societal organizations and small businesses. The overall landscape of research activities in the Netherlands has been broadened by this introduction of lectoraten in the universities of applied sciences.

Anyway, 'knowledge group' is of course no Dunglish.
The question is, does it make sense as a translation?
Imo it makes perfect sense:
See refs: 'een team deskundigen uit de praktijk en docenten' = subject matter experts and teachers = knowledge group
If you are not 100% satisfied, as far as equivalence is concerned, you might use in the first instance of 'lectoraat'):
knowledge group (lectoraat)
Further see refs in answer and below.

In addition to the D-box:
– Doceren.
– Het begeleiden van docenten.

Discussion
"(only and unique academic rank for University of Applied Science) Lector =
UK/commonwealth equivalent: Full Professor/Reader"
Now, from my understanding of what a lector and a lectoraat are, at a Dutch hogeschool, "Full Professor/Reader" just doesn't cut it.
Up until recently, I had been translating "lectoraat" as "research group" (similar to your suggested "research center/centre"), but then came across this sentence in my text:
Therefore, "onderzoeksgroepen en lectoraten" in this sentence now make me wonder whether I should have chosen something different.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_ranks_in_the_United_K...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_ranks_in_the_United_S...
By extension, why can't you just use "research center/centre" for "lectoraat"?
I was thinking of just giving up and leaving it in Dutch, in italics, which I've seen others resort to online (warning: random googling below):
"Working primarily for the 'Lectoraat Duurzame Energie' (Renewable Energy Research ..."
"of International Music Management at Inholland University of Applied Sciences. Tijana has interned at the lectoraat from February until June 2015."
"As a researcher of the lectoraat 'Smart Mobility & Logistics' he is part of the Urban ... The publication can be downloaded here (in Dutch)."
"lector
Nederland & Vlaanderen
(http://taalunieversum.org/onderwijs/termen/term/173/lector/ )
*****************************
These terms are a royal pain in the ass. No one in the English-speaking world will know what a ‘Lectorate’ or ‘Lector’ is, and yet glossing it as ‘research group’ or ‘professorship’ doesn't quite work either. That's why I decided to keep it as close to the foreign-sounding Dutch as possible, in italics, and explain it the first time.
Am having a similar problem with the term ‘hogeschool’, which, officially, should now be called a ‘university of applied sciences’, which is a real mouthful and sounds terrible if repeated too often. Some people shorten it to university (as in ‘de hogeschool ...’ = ‘the university ...’), but this can then be confused with a ‘research university’ (‘universiteit’), the other of the two Dutch systems.
http://www.kempel.nl/Onderzoek/BLO/Documents/Popeijus-Gelden...
