Looking at the rest of the article, it appears that the research areas are being awarded the money as they will help tackle societal problem. As such, I will go with your suggestion.

In Danish I would have suggested "Tre områder har så stort vækstpotentiale til gode for samfundet, at …", but "til gode" has been left out as implied. "within society" doesn't really mean anything, as you wouldn't expect growth anywhere else. It is because potential growth in these areas will benefit society that they are given assistance.

An alternative interpretation is that the three areas have a potential for creating growth in many general parts of society. If that is the case, my suggestion doesn't work. It's difficult to say what they really mean without knowing more about the subject.

Hi Simon, You need to change the settings to Danish to English. Otherwise I think "Growth potential for society" (without the definite article) sounds fine.
