The (name of state) Sentencing Accountability Commission

English to Spanish Law/Patents Law (general) criminal law
This is a commission set up to do the following:
"The *** (name of state) Sentencing Accountability Commission (SENTAC), was established under Title 11, §6580 of the **** Code. The overarching purpose for the creation of the Commission was to establish a system that emphasizes accountability of the offender to the criminal justice system and accountability of the criminal justice system to the public.

In fulfillment of its purpose, the Commission created sentencing guidelines [...] designed to ensure certain and consistent punishment commensurate with the seriousness of the offense and taking into consideration resource availability and cost."

Any suggestions? Thanks!

En inglés, viene a ser judgment of acquittal o judgment of conviction.

"In Spain ... at least 'sentencia' implies judicial decision + punishment."
Yes, but only when it is used as an elliptical of the full term, sentencia condenatoria.
Kathleen Shelly (asker) Apr 12, 2017:
Ah, but this commission has absolutely nothing to do with judicial decisions in terms of findings of guilt. It only has to do with actual sentencing, i.e. imposing penalties according to a certain process. I'll just use a different word there.

You can check this wiki page as a general reference https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentencia_judicial

Sentence I am a little confused. I have always understood that "sentencia" does not mean "sentence" in the sense of a penalty or punishment. This commission has to do with sentencing (condenas o penas) not judicial decisions (sentencias). Each answer translates sentence as sentencia. Is it used in this way in some countries?

"Accountability" is both of the offender to the criminal justice system and of the criminal justice system to the public so it must be taken into account in your translation. It refers to the fact that the offender and also the criminal justice system have to answer for their acts in their respective terms.

I would add "(SENTAC)" next to the Spanish name just once, probably in the first paragraph below the title where it appears.

English term (edited): The *** Sentencing Accountability Commission (SENTAC)

Buena semana.

@Kathleen: maybe you would find this more accurate:

http://cjc.delaware.gov/sentac/sentac.shtml
The Benchbook is designed to assist sentencing judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys and other participants within the sentencing community in the formulation of sentences that are consistent with the goals of sentencing reform promulgated by SENTAC. The overall sentencing philosophy of the General Assembly and SENTAC is that offenders should be sentenced to the least restrictive and most cost-effective sanction possible given the severity of the offense, the criminal history of the offender and the focus, which is, above all, to protect the public's safety.

Saludos
